Each week, our panel of writers will be asked a question about the game of golf. Topics will range from their predictions for the Tour season to what they would order from the concession stand at Augusta National Golf Club. No subject is off limits for this esteemed group.
What is the spectator’s favorite part of Augusta National? For many, it’s the food. It’s cheap and delicious, and that’s a tough combination to beat. The menu is filled with familiar items that have been served up for decades. We asked our writers to come up with what they’d order if they were walking the grounds this weekend.
This week’s question: Using the concessions menu below, what is your $10 order at Augusta National Golf Club?
Kevin Walsh:
$1.50 Pimento Cheese Sandwich (can’t not get one)
$2.50 Masters Club
$2 Georgia Peach Ice Cream Sandwich
$4 Domestic Beer
We’re going to simply roll with the most Master’s inspired cuisine we can. An interesting combo yes, but give me consumption in that order and we are ready to roll for hours at the greatest tournament on Earth.
Bear:
$4 Domestic Beer
$2 Georgia Peach Ice Cream Sandwich
$2.50 Ham and Cheese on Rye
$1.50 Chips
I knew I was getting a beer and the ice cream sandwich – simply must haves from that list. I had $4 left and went with the ham and cheese sandwich and chips combo over a grilled chicken sandwich and crackers combo.
Jake Mulholland:
$1.50 Masters Blend Coffee
$1.50 Chicken Biscuit
$2 Mixed Fruit
$2.50 Ham and Cheese on Rye
$2 Bottled Water
Got to fuel up for a long day on the course.
Sam Scherman:
$3 Grilled Chicken Wrap
$4 Domestic Beer
$2 Bottled Water
I’m not the most adventurous eater so this question is a little tough for me. When I attended in 2012, I tried the Pimento cheese because I couldn’t go to Augusta and not try it…it’s fine. I would choose the grilled chicken wrap, a domestic beer, and a bottled water. The 2 drink option may seem odd but the wrap should be great and after you slug the beer, you need to re-hydrate if you’re going to continue to walk the course for the next 5-6 hours. I don’t need those empty carbs from a bag of chips or some cookies, so we’ll go wrap with a double drink and have a dollar to spare.
Sean Carney:
$1.50 Sausage Biscuit
2 $4 Domestic Beers
I’d love to see more tournaments move to this Masters food and drink model. Granted, a lot of other tournaments don’t have the foot traffic the Masters do, though I think it’s really cool for the fans. Now, to my order. We’re going to start off the day with a nice sausage biscuit sandwich. Breakfast, the most important meal of the day! Then, we wash that down with two domestics. Can’t not be hammering beers at the Masters!
Frank Laterza:
2 $2 Fresh Brewed Ice Tea
$1.50 Chicken Biscuit
$3 Bar-B-Que Sandwich
$1.50 Chips
Whenever I go South, there is one thing that I must get: Sweet Tea. So I will be getting myself a damn Masters Sweet Tea and it will be my first order. $8 dollars remaining, and I have to be there before 10 AM for the Chicken Biscuit. Lock that in, down to $6.50. I assume I am going to be the only one to not grab a beer, and Corrigan is going to be deeply disappointed in me, but I’ll drink after we leave the course. I want a sandwich a little later on, so give me a Bar-B-Que sandwich and a bag of chips – $4.50 in total, and I’m down to $2. Let’s start where we began: another sweet tea to wash it down. Something tells me an Augusta sweet tea is better than most.
Mike McNamara:
$2.50 Ham and Cheese on Rye
$1.50 Sausage Biscuit
$2 Mixed Fruit
$4 Domestic Beer
An even $10 that will get the juices flowing and certainly be enough to fill me up. Maybe 2020 is the year that order comes to fruition.
Jack Corrigan:
$1.50 Chicken Biscuit
2 $4 Domestic Beers
I’m at Augusta and hopefully the weathers beautiful, hand me over that cold tasteless brewski.
Tony Kasper:
$1.50 Chicken Biscuit
$3 Bar-B-Que Sandwich
$1.50 Pimento Cheese Sandwich
$2 Georgia Peach Ice Cream Sandwich
$2 Fresh Brewed Ice Tea
My order is filled with southern classics, and I wouldn’t want my culinary experience at Augusta National to be any other way. Chicken, BBQ, Pimento Cheese, Georgia Peach; all washed down with a delicious ice tea. When in the south, do as the locals do.
